OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE
Osteopathy is a manual medicine that diagnoses, treats and prevents health problems. Osteopaths find the correlations between systems of the body - from musculoskeletal, through cardiovascular, respiratory, visceral, to nervous - they diagnose the root cause on an anatomical and physiological level and treat it with pain- free manual techniques addressing all the above systems, balancing the body.
Osteopathic medicine derived from academic medicine in the end of XIX century in United States. Osteopathic doctors make up 12% of all medical physicians in U.S. with growing numbers of medical students pursuing on osteopathy degree (DO - Doctor of Osteopathy, which is equal to MD - Medical Doctor).
FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE
Functional medicine determines how and why disease occurs and restores health by addressing the underlying causes of symptoms with personalized lifestyle changes (biochemistry of nutrition, physical activity, stress management and many more) and targeted micronutrient therapies, hormonal therapies and if needed - pharmacotherapy - all based on detailed diagnosis with extensive blood tests, patient's interview, any additional testing needed (gene/ microbiome/ mitochondrial testing etc.). FM model is an individualised, patient-centered, science-based approach. It requires a detailed understanding of patient's genetic, biochemical and lifestyle factors, and uses this data to guide personalised treatment protocols. FM is focused on chronic disease and symptoms and their complexity.
As of today functional medicine education can only be studied as a post-diploma for medical professionals with degree.
